Conservator-Type Distribution Transformers are structurally similar to Hermetic Transformers; however, they are equipped with a special expansion (conservator) tank at the top to accommodate oil expansion. As the transformer operates and the oil heats up, its volume increases, and this volume change is absorbed by the conservator tank.

Since the conservator tank operates open to the atmosphere, it is equipped with silica gel (air breather) to prevent moisture from entering the system. This component absorbs moisture from the incoming air, thereby preventing oil moisture contamination and structural degradation.

Over time, silica gel loses its effectiveness and becomes unable to perform its function. Therefore, periodic maintenance procedures—such as regular replacement of the silica gel, measurement of oil quality, and testing of dielectric (breakdown) voltage—must be carried out.

Advantages:

  • Tolerance allows the larger volume change.
  • High-temperature difference supports the safe operation.
  • Standard maintenance procedures are long-lasting comfort.
  • The danger of high pressure is open to the atmosphere due to excessive loading does not occur.
